Logitech Harmony, Google Assistant: How They Make Your Living Room Smarter and More Convenient

When Logitech Harmony and the Google Assistant work together, you bring the power of voice to your home entertainment center. "Ok Google, ask Harmony to turn on sports" can power on your TV, set your stereo to surround sound, lower your window shades and even set your table lamps to your team colors.

If you've enabled voice recognition but would still like others in your household to have access to Harmony commands, they will need to enable the Harmony Action in the Google Home app from their account. For more information on voice recognition with the Google Assistant, please see: Media and multiple users on Google Home

In order to tune to a specific channel, you'll need a Watch TV Activity configured in your Harmony account. You'll then be able to say, "Ok Google, ask Harmony to go to channel one hundred and twenty-nine". Configuring Favorite TV channels in Harmony allows you to launch those stations using voice, such as "Ok Google, ask Harmony to go to NBC on my TV". Learn more about creating Favorite channels.

When you connect Google Home to Caséta lighting controls, you take a voice assistant that searches for information or manages your schedule and then integrate it with your smart home system. So now the Google Assistant voice service can control your lighting and other smart products through Google Home or your smart phone, all at the speed of sound.

If you have more than one Google Home speaker in your home, you can broadcast messages to all speakers (except the one you give the command to) using one of the built-in commands. Or you can create your own broadcast message. Plus, people can now reply to broadcasted messages.

These appliances trade cost-effectiveness for ease-of-use and comfort. You spend a little extra money on your electricity usage each month for the convenience of your TV turning on when you press the power button on the remote. Individually, vampire appliances cost you only a few cents more on your electricity bill. However, when you realize how many of them you have in your home, these devices can cost an average of $200 a year in electricity.

It's only natural to see furniture giant Ikea wade into the smart home market. Its Tradfri smart bulb kit is an affordable and easy way to swap the lights in your home. Plus, it includes something you won't find with most of the competition: a remote. Controlling light bulbs from your phone has its perks, but a remote gives you more flexibility. It's small, can turn the bulb on and off, and controls colors and brightness.

The Philips kit is more expensive than the Ikea one, but it's available at a variety of retailers and is compatible with most assistants. It comes with three or four bulbs and a Hue Bridge hub that lets you connect the bulbs to your phone or voice assistant. You can choose many colors and brightness levels, as well as preset scenes to set the mood (or you can make your own). The app includes helpful how-to videos that explain the bulb's extra functions, like using one as a timer (it blinks!).

Google Assistant has taken up residence in a new place: your Samsung smart TV! Yes, you read that correctly. You can now talk to Google to quickly access entertainment, get answers on screen, control smart devices, and more using your voice. All you need to do is set up the feature and connect your TV with the Google Assistant app on your phone.

Whether you just got a brand-new Samsung TV or you've had it for a while, setting up Google Assistant is more or less the same. You'll just need to use your phone to connect your Google account to the TV. Once Google Assistant has been activated, you'll be able to control your TV with your voice!

Google Home is a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant that can provide real-time answers and activate streaming music services, smart home devices and your Hyundai. Using Google Assistant and Hyundai Bluelink, you can conveniently send destinations to your vehicle, start it, set the temperature and more. To get started, link your MyHyundai account using your MyHyundai username and password. In order to access remote functions, you will need to verbally provide your Bluelink PIN. Remember, an active Remote Package subscription is required to access the Hyundai Bluelink Agent for Google Assistant.

The AIY Voice Kit from Google lets you build your own natural language processor and connect it to the Google Assistant or Cloud Speech-to-Text service, allowing you to ask questions and issue voice commands to your programs. All of this fits in a handy little cardboard cube, powered by a Raspberry Pi.

While you can use the Fire TV stick to do much of what the Cube does more cheaply, I like my Amazon Fire TV Cube better. Why? The Cube was designed for the sole purpose of controlling your television with your voice. Check out the following excellent video review from Smarter Home Life.

The single most important question you should ask when choosing a universal remote with voice control is whether you want it to be compatible with your smart speaker ecosystem. Do you already have an Alexa or Google Voice device? If so, then you can control the devices you configure for your universal remote with your favorite assistant.

With the Fios TV Voice Remote, you can use your voice to tell your Fios TV One what to do. Simply press and hold the microphone button to give commands. Speak normally and hold the Fios TV Voice Remote about 12 inches from your mouth. If held too closely, your voice may come across distorted and difficult for the Fios TV Voice Remote to understand.

Google smart home devices let you do a lot of things with the power of your voice. Whether it is playing music or knowing the latest news, you can control everything in your home. When Google Home is connected to your TV, you can have access to TV shows from Prime Video or Netflix by just using your voice. It can also so give your schedule for the day. TVs that come with Chromecast enable easy connecting of Google Home devices. Thankfully you can also use Google Home on TVs without Chromecast. We shall now discuss how to connect Google Home to your television without Chromecast.

Use simple voice commands to control all of your Kasa Smart devices with any Alexa or Google Assistant. Tell your voice assistant to turn on your living room lamp, have it schedule the coffee maker for the morning, even turn on your office fan when it gets too hot.

These days, many smartphones have Google Assistant, a well-liked voice assistant service from Google. Even the most recent Hisense TVs have the feature built, and you can use it to operate your TV.

With that in mind, the first thing to consider is where you want to place your smart plug. While most are svelte enough to fit next to one another in your typical wall outlet, not all of them are, and power strips are a different story entirely. If you have a crowded power strip, it's important to consider the plug outlet's location. For instance, some feature outlets on the side. Whether this layout is easier or more difficult to access depends on the type of power strip you're using.

If you're concerned about the environment or hoping to save a few bucks, look for a plug that supports energy monitoring. Just keep in mind that the energy data collected isn't uniform across all plugs. Some provide a detailed breakdown of how long your device has been on over the entire day, your daily average "on" time, your (estimated) monthly and daily power costs, and your average power usage in watts. Others simply give a cursory overview of the hours you use over a set period or don't report power usage at all.

Ultimately, the best smart plug for you is the one that easily interacts with the products you already have, especially any smart speakers and smart displays. For example, if you like Siri or are an avid iPhone user, you can get the best experience from a plug that supports Apple's HomeKit protocol. Similarly, if you already use Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, make sure to get a plug that supports your voice assistant of choice.

Of course, it can be quite confusing if you have multiple people in a household, and each assistant tries to tackle this problem in its own way. Both Google Home and Amazon Echo now offer multiple voice profiles, so you can train the device to recognize your specific voice and provide some degree of personalized response based on this.

Google's Voice Match is the most sophisticated of these approaches, offering personalized calendars, flights, payments, photos and more; you can even set your own default media services. However, I have not infrequently encountered problems with it recognizing my voice and refusing to give me access to my information until I've retrained my Voice Match. Alexa, meanwhile, currently offers only personalized shopping, calling and some media options.

Apple has taken a slightly different approach with Siri: Before you activate the ability to use the "Hey, Siri" wake phrase on an iOS device, you must train Siri to recognize only your voice. That prevents this assistant from giving your personal information to someone else and avoids the assistant responding on, say, both your iPhone and iPad.

If you have your hands full of groceries or you are rushing out to an important meeting, Google and IFTTT are at the ready to send a message to your team or close the garage door. Google Assistant is just a quick "Ok Google" away when you need help. With IFTTT, your voice assistant can get even more powerful and help you create customized experiences to upgrade your daily routines.

We recently created five new automations with some of our latest services. The ability to speak an additional text ingredient to your voice assistant means that you can dictate messages to send to Discord or Telegram, or even add a new task to your task management system when your hands are full.

With Google present in our homes, we often rely on smart hubs and speakers to help us set timers or play music. Your voice assistant is capable of far-reaching utility inside your house. If you use the last of the milk in your morning coffee, set a reminder for yourself or send yourself an email so that you can go to the store before the next day. Or, control your iRobot and smart lights with the power of your voice. 2ff7e9595c
