Google Earth Meets Virtual Reality: Explore the World in 360°

The metaverse of the future is likely to fully support augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and the connectivity to link all worlds. Indeed, in its most democratic instantiation, anyone will have the opportunity to create a space and be part of a user-generated global community on an interoperable multiplatform where they can share their games or goods with the world. The G5 internet speed should allow this to be a reality.

Google Earth Meets Virtual Reality

Google said Wednesday that a virtual reality version of Google Earth is now available to download for free via the Steam gaming distribution service. As of now, only HTC Vive virtual reality headset users will be able to use the app, but Google plans to make it compatible with other headsets in the future.

In the last year, the Department of Fine Arts at Winthrop acquired an HTC Vive, one of the latest pieces of virtual reality hardware, with the goal of giving its students the chance to design and create virtual art and exhibits.

The metaverse is the emerging 3-D-enabled digital space that uses virtual reality, augmented reality, and other advanced internet and semiconductor technology to allow people to have lifelike personal and business experiences online.

My research lab focuses on two areas: One is on brain-computer interfaces. We use machine learning techniques to detect and analyze brain signals and respond to them in real-time. The other area is virtual reality. I have people embody avatars of different genders and identities to increase empathy and reduce biases. In my lab, your physical movements are tracked so that you can see your physical movements in a different virtual body and view yourself as a different identity.

Google Earth VR is an impressive version of Google Earth designed to work with virtual reality headsets such as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. When first logging in, you're given a tour that showcases many of its features, most notably topography and 3D models of buildings and other structures. While these are present in the regular version of Google Earth, the sense of scale is truly brought to life with VR. Many areas also have Street View, where students can experience standing in the area and looking around.

Currently, virtual reality is expensive to implement, requiring not only a headset, tracking system, and controllers, but a computer powerful enough to run it. The space that this takes up -- and the challenges of making sure every student gets to experience it -- may be vexing issues for teachers to solve. Teachers will need to consider whether Google Earth VR is enough of a reason to invest in VR on its own. Certainly, it would be a welcome addition to a dedicated makerspace or media center.

Blocks lets you easily create 3D objects in virtual reality, no matter your modelling experience. Using six simple tools, you can bring your applications to life, create a volumetric masterpiece, or simply let your imagination run wild.

ENGAGE is a new free to use education and presentation platform that seeks to transform how people share ideas and teach lessons to each other globally by harnessing the power of virtual reality technologies such as the Oculus Rift & HTC Vive.

This original immersive virtual-reality project is told through the voice of Lt. James Downing, who at 103 is the second-oldest living American veteran to have witnessed that day, and is geared towards audiences of all ages.

In 2018, I had the opportunity to put on a virtual reality (VR) headset for the first time. I was pursuing a Ph.D. in French and Second Language Acquisition and had enrolled in a seminar focused on technology and language learning.

One way of getting tourists to travel abroad from the comfort of their own homes is through virtual reality (VR) technology and 360-degree videography. We round up the best virtual travel tours and online travel experiences that can be enjoyed online right now.

Those wishing to explore the US while borders are closed can explore national parks including Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and the Everglades with 360-degree videos via google earth. For a truly detailed journey through the beautiful National Park of Yosemite, click here.

Other museums have created more personalised tours, available on their own websites. The VR tour of Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum is particularly impressive, and the Uffizi gallery in Florence also uses virtual reality to get viewers up-close with the art. Over in New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a collection of 360-degree videos that you can watch.

In the mid-2000s, one of the coolest pieces of software to play around with was Google Earth. That experience is now coming to high-end virtual reality headsets with Google Earth VR. For the moment, it is available for free on Steam, but only for the HTC Vive.

And it will be an incredible resource in education. Students will have the opportunity to virtually travel to and study any place on earth. This is not the stationary experience of a 360 photo, but a deeply immersive encounter with a location. They could examine urban development in emerging global cities. Or study the rock formations in a canyon or the eroding coastline near an ocean.

Author Neal Stephenson is credited with coining the term "metaverse" in his 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash," in which he envisioned lifelike avatars who met in realistic 3D buildings and other virtual reality environments.

Since then, various developments have made mileposts on the way toward a real metaverse, an online virtual world which incorporates augmented reality, virtual reality, 3D holographic avatars, video and other means of communication. As the metaverse expands, it will offer a hyper-real alternative world for you to coexist in.

It's a combination of multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality and video where users "live" within a digital universe. Supporters of the metaverse envision its users working, playing and staying connected with friends through everything from concerts and conferences to virtual trips around to the world.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the newly named Meta (formerly Facebook), estimates it could take five to 10 years before the key features of the metaverse become mainstream. But aspects of the metaverse currently exist. Ultra-fast broadband speeds, virtual reality headsets and persistent always-on online worlds are already up and running, even though they may not be accessible to all.

The Lima Public Library is proud to present our HTC Vive Virtual Reality system provided by the Lima Library Association. The Lima/ Allen County community can experience virtual reality for free at the library during one of our events. For questions about our next virtual reality event please contact the Ask Here desk by calling 419-228-5113 ext. 1. We have many virtual reality games to choose from including:

Having the opportunity to help prepare future health care professionals through virtual reality technology has developed Mallala's perspective on the possible ways technology can enhance health care delivery and training. With her education in health informatics and experience as a physician, she selects appropriate cases for students to explore in virtual reality that align with their course requirements. She also assists Bethany Cieslowski, VR and simulation coordinator in the School of Nursing, in setting up the lab and debriefing with students about the cases they completed.

The real life is great, but virtual reality is so cool too! Have you ever tried having a meeting in virtual reality? Even though it sounds like a thing from the future, it's actually something achievable now! Use this futuristic-looking template and start talking about technology as much as you want! Blue tones and many resources such as graphs, tables, icons or maps... It has everything!

While still nascent in many respects, the metaverse has suddenly become big business, with technology titans and gaming giants such as Meta (previously Facebook), Microsoft, Epic Games, Roblox, and others all creating their own virtual worlds or metaverses. The metaverse draws on a vast ensemble of different technologies, including virtual reality platforms, gaming, machine learning, blockchain, 3-D graphics, digital currencies, sensors, and (in some cases) VR-enabled headsets.

Rather, the land is located online, in a set of virtual worlds that tech insiders have dubbed the metaverse. Prices for plots have soared as much as 500% in the last few months ever since Facebook announced it was going all-in on virtual reality, even changing its corporate name to Meta Platforms. 2ff7e9595c
